Suggestion against 1.d4 I need something new perhaps or modification to the way I play against 1.d4. Long long back I used to play 1....d5, but that was only for a short while. Since then I have always played the KID with 1....Nf6, all the main lines. Of late I am finding trouble, and slowly, I think even at the world level, KID is becoming less popular as white seems to have a definite advantage with mostly 9.b4 or 9.Nd2. Even others give white… More: chess online

Chess Skills. Born or bread? The question hit me while I was reading the article on Gata Kamski and his father Rustam, posted in the "Gata Kamski on fire..." thread. Apparently, Rustam made Gata play chess from the age of eight and drove him to become a chess champion. He believed that anyone can become a champion if he perseveres. That made me think, how much of my chess skills are from my talent and how much from my efforts dedicated to the… More: backgammon online

Plans What do you do to create a sucessfull plan? That's the million dollar question. The only planning technique I know is that of Silman, but I find it difficult to actually put into practice, especially because I tend to think that individual positions are sharper than they actually are, and I rarely think that I have a "free move" that I don't have to react. read Find a good tactics book, set up a chess board, and follow along until you… More: online chess

Your Chess Resume' or Background Since deadofknight brought up the matter of one's "Chess Resume' " in the Rook Ending Thread of rat-baby, I've started this thread to invite GK players post here involving their Chess History, Background, Related Involvements(EG.Directing? Organizing? etc.) or as he put it there; your "Chess Resume'". Since being asked to, I'll start it off with some of my own. And would really enjoy seeing yours shared here. I'd… More: backgammon online

Anyone like the French? I am considering playing 1...e6 in response 1.e4. I have searched this forum for discussions about the French but there seems to have been little said about it. Is there anyone on here who has played the French many times? If so could you give any advice, like after: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 what the pros and cons of 3...Nf6 and 3...Bb4 ? The French! I almost always play the French because it is easy to understand and easy to… More: chess history

game collections One of the best and most entertaining way to learn chess is to play through a well annotated game collection. Recently I retrieved my old copy of "Logical Chess Move by Move" by Irving Chernev from the shed. This book has been touted as the best book for beginners for nearly 50 years now. Lets take a look at the first game. Von Scheve,T - Teichmann,R [C53] Berlin Jubilee Berlin (9), 1907 [Parker,T] 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 play chess online…

Has Topa totally lost it? According to this ... yes! -> www.chessninja.com Well of course it would be like that there. That's one of the most anti-Topalov sites I've seen ever since the WC match. But look back at the history of what Russians have done or been accused of doing to ensure the player they want to win something wins it. And then tell Topalov that his opponent is going to the bathroom very often, the only place with no camera, play chess online…

Novice Nook #49 Closing in on the big Five-Oh, this week's article is called "Every Good Chessplayer..." I've just had time to skim it but it looks like a good discussion of the traits that make up a strong player - not the talent aspect, but the things that one can consciously work on. I do have a question about one of them, #13, Board Vision. I'm sure it can be improved over time, but, as someone who doesn't have much "chunk vision" I question play chess online…

Kings Gambit Ime thinking about trying the kings gambit on this site because of the exciting, tactical chess it can produce, but ime aware that it hasnt been used for years by gm's because it is essentialy flawed. Can it however be used on gameknot against good players or would it just put me at a disadvantage? It is not flawed, essentially or otherwise. Just note that there is a ton of theory out there on this opening. I don't advise ignoring play chess online…

During your opponent's time... During an OTB game, I will analyze the board regardless of whose turn it is. Occassionally I'll get up and not think about the game for a moment, but usually there's not really enough time to waste the time you have when your opponent's clock is running. But in a correspondence game? How many of you analyze the board and think of moves during your opponent's turn? Does it help, or is there already so much time to play chess online…

Endgame fun I was playing a blitz game here some time ago and reached what I think is an interesting endgame (and by interesting I mean I'm upset that I'm up material but think I can't get more than a draw). I don't recall the position exactly (it's been a while), but this is close enough to be entertaining. It's black to move. Ignoring that I will lose on time, how do you evaluate this position? Oh, one more thing I should point out. The play chess online…

I can strongly recommend this book, for all CC-players: Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch / ISBN 0 486264 86 6 / Published by Dover Publications. This book dealing with pawnstructures, so everymann can understand this important issue, in our Royal game called chess. Also the interaction between pawns, in the games different faces, is strongly focused on. Best wishes Cairo I second this emotion... ...with every pawn in my Rex-Wyvill. Here's play chess online…

Is there a need for this? As I've mentioned before in these forums, I recently began spending the bulk of my chess time on over-the-board games (face to face!), having found a club a couple of towns over with convenient meeting times. But it was a bit of an accident that I stumbled across them at all. When I first came "back to chess" a few years back, I poked around looking for local clubs, but didn't find a lot of helpful information. I'd heard play chess online…
